The Rant Report

February

Many things to rant about but since I don't feel like it, I hope you're enjoying the long-shadow days of winter. Spring will come again and I shall remain patient. You too.

Songbook One

Save Me

I’m here today

Might be gone tomorrow

All I have is time to borrow

Please hold me close

Lead me away

So I may see another day

Save me

Save me

Save me

Can you save me?

It’s cold in here

I’m in the shadows

I have the will

To win the battle

Don’t walk away

Leave me alone

I’m just like you

I want a home

Save me

Save me

Save me

Will you save me?

Chorus:

Save me

From the fate I see

Save me

Please care for me

Save me

I want to be

Save me.

Save me

Please take the time

Save me

Will you be mine?

Save me

Bless the stars above

Save me

I need your love.

My time is near

And still I wait

Please come inside

Don’t hesitate

Look to me now

See who I am

I promise you

I’ll be your friend

Save me

Save me

Save me

Can you save me?

I’ll be with you

Through thick and thin

Fine years together

Let it all begin

Come to me now

I want your smile

Your eyes, your heart

Please stay a while

Save me

Save me

Save me

Will you save me?

Chorus:

Save me

From the fate I see

Save me

Please care for me

Save me

I want to be

Save me.

Save me

Please take the time

Save me

Will you be mine?

Save me

Bless the stars above

Save me

I need your love.

A door has closed

You never arrived

I face the fire

The time has arrived

Don’t look back now

To see my fate

Or try to help

For it’s too late

Save me

Save me

Save me

I hoped you’d save me

But now I ask

Find room to care

For others like me

Who need you near

Your voice, your hands

Your gentle touch

I’ll tell you now

It means so much

Save me

Save me

Save me

Will you save me?

Chorus:

Save me

From the fate I see

Save me

Please care for me

Save me

I want to be

Save me

Save me

Please take the time

Save me

Will you be mine?

Save me

Bless the stars above

Save me

I need your love

I’m here today

Might be gone tomorrow

All I have is time to borrow

Please hold me close

Lead me away

So I may see another day

Save me

Save me

Save me

I thought you'd save me...

***To the Reader, a note about this sad tune. I was feeling mighty pissed about one particular and beautiful little cat who was "put to sleep." It is her picture that you see above; no one came forward so she died.  I would have driven across the country to save her, had it been possible. This was composed to bring witness to the countless homeless animals that languish in kill shelters throughout the nation. Domestic animal overpopulation is a human problem, not an animal problem. However, they become the unfortunate messengers.

Responsibility for correcting this injustice begins with the spaying and neutering of companion animals. Anyone who does not take ownership is a part of the problem. Do the tight thing. Enough said.

1915

The year was nineteen one-five

When Sarah was feeling quite alive

It was later that year she took to bed

A fever wrapped around her pretty head

Chorus:

The doctor said it was consumption

Others would claim her lack of faith

Life seems so unfair. It’s jaded

Now the lovely flower has faded

Mama mama mama come quick and see

My sister Sarah won’t talk to me

Lookin’ at her eyes sunk deep in her head

I think she’s alive but she might be dead

The doctor said it was consumption

Others would claim her lack of faith

Life seems so unfair. It’s jaded

Now the lovely flower has faded

When she was alive some folks would say

A girl like that will always have her way

Now she’s gone proves that wasn’t true

Not for me and certainly not for you

The doctor said it was consumption

Others would claim her lack of faith

Life seems so unfair. It’s jaded

Now the lovely flower has faded

I went to the graveyard the other day

To place a flower by where she lay

A pretty bluebird went flyin’ by

I got down on my knees and started to cry

The doctor said it was consumption

Others would claim her lack of faith

Life seems so unfair. It’s jaded

Now the lovely flower has faded

Listen my friend to the story’s sad end

There ain’t no lyin’ or need to pretend

I miss her more every single day

I wonder when the pain will go away

Now the lovely flower has faded

Now the lovely flower has faded

Now the lovely flower has faded...

The Day the Wheels Came Off

The sun was brightly shining

With no dark clouds in sight

No pills or sleep aids needed

To make it through the night

Then the world began to shutter

It made a terrible cough

Everyone just headed home

On the day the wheels came off

Chorus:

The day the wheels came off

No one had suspected

When the wheels came off

False reality was rejected

The day the wheels came off

Was time to pay the piper

When the wheels came off

Things couldn’t get much riper

Dark days were seen across the land

Immunity none for child or man

Dow Jones down, savings in the can

What happened next no one understands

When hearing the news

Some laughed, some scoffed

But it wasn’t so funny

When the wheels came off

The day the wheels came off

No one had suspected

When the wheels came off

False reality was rejected

The day the wheels came off

Was time to pay the piper

When the wheels came off

Things couldn’t get much riper

Who's to blame the cry went out

Bankers and greed without a doubt

A siren’s call easy credit for you

But government had a hand in it too

Those empty stores and broken homes

All gave pause to future loans

With factories closed, no help was needed

For poverty’s ground was freshly seeded

The day the wheels came off

No one had suspected

When the wheels came off

False reality was rejected

The day the wheels came off

Was time to pay the piper

When the wheels came off

Things couldn’t get much riper

Winter approached with a sinister sneer

Everyone looked to get out of here

Nowhere to go, future in the air

Was time to say a collective prayer

Heavenly Father, we come in shame

And accept the fact we are to blame

Show us the way, guide us through

We promise we'll make amends to you

The day the wheels came off

No one had suspected

When the wheels came off

False reality was rejected

The day the wheels came off

Was time to pay the piper

When the wheels came off

Things couldn’t get much riper

Hard days
ahead for many it seemed

Others did well, fulfilled their dreams

Things rebuilt, new age began

Built on respecting one’s fellow man

It proved to be a powerful seed

Replacing the dirty five-letter greed

Although anger used a poison pen

A promise was made, forget about them.

The day the wheels came off

No one had suspected

When the wheels came off

False reality was rejected

The day the wheels came off

Was time to pay the piper

When the wheels came off

Things couldn’t get much riper

The sun was brightly shining

With no dark clouds in sight

No pills of sleep aids needed

To make it through the night...

Lola

Lola dear Lola

Come closer to me

It's your lovely face

I'm waiting to see

With eyes sea green

And a smile so bright

I hope you'll come

To see me tonight...

When I first saw you

I just had to say

What can I do

To steal you away?

You needed my help

It was easy to see

And now there is nothing

That will take you from me

Chorus:

Lola dear Lola

Come closer to me

It's your lovely face

I'm waiting to see

With eyes sea green

And a smile so bright

I hope you'll come

To see me tonight...

Now that you're mine

My heart's in a mess

How long can you stay?

Many years I would guess

And that would be fine

I want you to know

So stay with me now

And don't ever go

Lola dear Lola

Come closer to me

It's your lovely face

I'm waiting to see

With eyes sea green

And a smile so bright

I hope you'll come

To see me tonight...

The years, they have passed

You're still here with me

Our initials I carved

Are still on the tree

I love you today

Even more so than then

For we all are God's children

And will be...to the end

Lola dear Lola

Come closer to me

It's your lovely face

I'm waiting to see

With eyes sea green

And a smile so bright

I hope you'll come

To see me tonight...

With eyes sea green

And a smile so bright

I hope you'll come

To see me tonight...

Songbook Three

Bubbleville

Driving from the cityscape

Just beyond the Interstate

Tall trees line the boulevard

Heading west toward home

Big box store is on the right

Says it’s open every night

And just before the traffic light

Sign says reduced speed zone

Black SUV goes flying past

Its pilot really on the gas

Has the chance for one last pass

Before the entrance on the hill

Lil made it back in record time

Well before the cuckoo chimes

It’s her life, her work, her daily drill

Welcome home to Bubbleville

Chorus:

Bubbleville, hey Bubbleville

Pretty houses in a row

Keep the gate closed overnight

My contract makes it's so

Bubbleville, hey Bubbleville

A mighty fine slice of pie

A darn nice place where money’s king

And no one ever cries

No strangers here around her block

If one is seen, best call the cops

Who lives there, not really sure

The window shades are dropped

The sidewalks are so quiet now

So peaceful is her street

Workers toil extended hours

To keep the place so neat

Chorus

Lil texts her friend while on the run

Let’s meet for drinks at eight

He’s coming, at least he said he would

Be there, don’t be late

The kids are at my mother’s house

I’ve got the whole night free

If all goes according to my plan

I’ll take him home with me

Chorus/Bridge

Sad-eyed Lil, she's driving home

A tear wiped from her eye

An empty seat beside her sits

No plot materialized

Open up, you goddamn gate!

The button's pushed, I’m ill!

To spend another weepy night

Alone in Bubbleville

Chorus (Var.):

Bubbleville, hey Bubbleville

Pretty houses in a row

Keep the gate closed overnight

My contract makes it so

Bubbleville, hey Bubbleville

It all seems very nice

But herein lies a loneliness

Because everything has its price...

Everything has its price...

Everything has its price...

Life's Winding River

My love, my life

I wait for you

Here in this golden field.

Come over now and rest awhile

Our love will never yield.

I’ll carry you, you’ve carried me

Through calm and stormy weather

But when time calls

And we must part

We’ll still go on forever.

Chorus:

Go now to the other side

Cross where the waters are calm.

There you can rest, catch your breath

Before we move along.

With your sword held high

Slay your fears

And promise not to wither

For the strength you seek

It waits for you

When you cross life’s winding river.

Step careful on the river stones

Wet and slick with moss.

Take my hand, I’ll guide you through

Without a moment’s loss.

The other side’s not far away

The flowers in Fall bloom

Take my hand

Come with me

We’ll reach its shore very soon.

Chorus/Bridge/Chorus

Your trial has passed

We can safely say

It’s over and it’s done.

And now's the time to enjoy life

For you have clearly won.

Stay with me now my special friend

For there’s many years ahead

To share each other’s hopes and dreams

As on the day that we were wed.

Chorus (Var.):

Come now to the other side

Cross where the waters are calm

There you can rest, catch your breath

Before we move along.

With your sword held high

You've slain your fears

Now promise not to wither

For the strength you seek

You found it there

When you crossed life’s winding river.

When you crossed life's winding river.

When you crossed life's winding river...

Everybody’s Gettin’ Dead

Old Bob died yesterday

And from what is being said

Got out of bed to have a smoke

Popped a vein in his head.

And just last week Mr. Jimmy

Was walking down the street

Tried to hitch a passin’ ride

Big truck knocked him off his feet.

Chorus:

Seems the more I hear

The more I stay in bed

Livin’ life’s a dangerous game,

Everybody’s gettin’ dead

Call me crazy, call me a fool

I know that’s being said

But everywhere I look it seems,

Everybody’s gettin’ dead.

Why, Gramma Bertie just last month

Was feelin’ pretty bored

Had a nice ride in her Chevrolet

Until she met up with a Ford.

And my cousin Ernie, that’s Rhonda’s kid

At the lake where the boat is moored

Got tripped up, fell in the drink

And now he’s with the Lord.

Chorus

Now everyday I check my pulse

I’m careful about what I eat

I’m layin’ low, I stay inside

Keep my body off the street.

My dog Blue went the other day

Bad heart the doctor said

But he helped to remind me too

That everybody’s gettin' dead.

Chorus:

Everybody’s gettin’ dead

Everybody’s gettin’ dead

Everybody’s gettin’ dead

Obion County

Heard about a fire

Down in Tennessee

This past September

The news told me

Burned a family’s house

Down to the ground

Killed a little cat

And three young hounds

Chorus:

They were asleep inside

And not expecting that

Their world would end

With the light of a match

Burned a little trash

Got out of control

The wasn’t much left

Except a smoking hole

Could of been avoided

Was an accident

Called 911

The trucks weren’t sent

I beg you chief

Put out the flame

Can’t fight your fire

It’s you I blame

Chorus

Your bill’s not paid

That’s seventy five

But I’ll pay you man

And more besides

Too late for that

It’s just your turn

Now stand aside

And let it burn

Chorus

That’s the story

It’s sad you see

Down in Obion County

Tennessee

The flame, their pain,

Those lost little lives

Just don’t add up to no

Seventy five.

Chorus

Heard about a fire down in Tennessee....

Captain Johnny

Out of the West

He came ridin’ one day

On a horse made of steel

So they say.

He’s comin’ to town

Gonna turn things around

But will he still let the lobbyists play?

Chorus:

Oh Captain Johnny

Our dear Captain Johnny

How are you feeling today?

Are you angry, are you sad

Are you uptight, are you mad?

When things don’t quite work out

Your way.

Well...

He’s a hero that we know

From a past ugly war

Made the man that

He is today.

He knows what to do

And now he’s telling you

If you don’t vote for him

We’ll all pay.

Chorus

Now...

He’s stirred up the right

Filled them up full of fight

About the dangers

That we face today.

Drop a few more good bombs

Just like in Viet Nam

And the bad guys

Will all run away.

Chorus

His good preacher friend

On this he amends

Got in trouble with what he’d say.

Needs the folks in the pews

Or he’s gonna lose

He’s got to win them

Somehow, someway.

Chorus

He’s a straight-talkin’ man

We must understand

His word is his honor

He’ll say.

But hangin’ with those clowns

While our laws get broken down

Makes me wonder

If he’s really this way.

Chorus

Free markets are the best

Forget about the rest

Poison food, toxic toys

No way!

And healthcare you buy

Can’t afford it?

Well, then you die

And we’ll see you at the pearlies someday.

Chorus

And now it’s up to you

Are you gonna send him through

To be the leader

Of the USA?

Or will you send him home

To the range where he can roam

While we try to jump start

A new day.

Chorus:

Oh Captain Johnny

Our dear Captain Johnny

Are you angry

Are you sad

Has the country gone mad?

For they didn’t quite see it

Your way.

Songbook Two

Suburban Dream

She’s got a house in the ‘burbs

With a whole lotta square

A three car garage

And central air

Living so free, so fine

And feeling so fair

Don’t bother to ask me

Why I should care

Chorus:

She lives up the street

Always looks so fine

I’m anxious to meet her

Will she be mine?

Can you come out to play?

Your house or mine?

We can turn up the heat

Suzi Valentine.

There’s two kids at home

And dog and a cat

And from what I’ve been told

A boyfriend at that

But that don’t worry me none

Just biding my time

Because I’ll be waiting for her

Suzi Valentine.

Chorus

Look, here she comes now

She’s walking my way

My head’s feelin’ funny

What more can I say?

Should I ask her to lunch?

Or maybe to dinner

Or just stand here a fool

A saint before sinner!

Chorus

Her pants fit so tight

Just like her sweater

A picture can’t be painted

That looks any better.

She smiles as she passes

But not a word has been said!

I’m gutted, I’m broken

I’m ready for bed!

Chorus

She’s fading from sight

Couldn’t feel any lower

Then my wife

She cries out

Get over here

And fix the damn mower!

Chorus

She's got a house in the 'burbs

With a whole lot of square...

Kicking the Can

James and Marie

Young lives intertwined

Fresh hopes for tomorrow

Of what they might find

Of work, of success

Of things yet defined

They reach out to grab

Few fruit on the vine

Chorus:

Kick the can down the road

To see where it lands

Might mean something special

Maybe part of a plan

Kick the can down the road

Dreams shimmer in flight

And where it ends up

Might make something right

Now Harry, he’s older

Not sure what to do

Gray hair through his fingers

Must try something new

Alone in the night

Pulls the sheet to his eyes

The good life’s been had

Was it truth, was it lies?

Bridge

Dear Maggie, she’s forty

Going on sixty-four

She struggles a lot

Bad health, it’s a chore

Too much TV

Bad sex on the news

Her fuel tank’s on empty

The kids need new shoes

Chorus

Serenity it seems

Doesn’t grow on the tree

And if ever it did

It fell with the leaves

A struggle, its silence

Never far from our sight

The strength to keep trying

Never give up the fight.

Chorus

Flowers

Flowers rise up

Out of the ground

Some grow quick

Some grow strong

Some so pretty

Bring a tear to the eye

Some need a lot

Of rain from the sky.

Chorus:

Some can’t be seen

When the weeds are high

Some cannot stand tall

When the ground’s too dry

Some never bloom

I know not why

But they all grow old

They wither

Then they die.

Some get planted

Along the path to my door

Some in places

You might see on a tour

Some end up

In a vase on a desk

There’s not one place

That’s really the best.

Chorus

Bridge

People are like flowers

Some don’t last long

Live for today

Do better, grow strong

The seeds they're planted

In the earth they lay

To rise up again

On a warm spring day.

Chorus (Var.):

And just like some people

They start anew

Could be me, might be you

Might not know much

But I think it's true

Do your best work today

Let tomorrow come to you.

Buncombe County Blues

I’ve got them Buncombe County blues

From my hat down to my shoes

Now’s the time that I must choose

To shake them Buncombe County blues

They told me it’s the place to be

But it ain’t happenin’ for me

Said that I could never lose

I’ve got them Buncombe County blues

Chorus I:

The wages I earn have left me poor

That house I want I can’t afford

In fancy cafes I get ignored

But I want to be cool too

A New Age cat I’m supposed to be

All dressed down and feelin’ free

Stuff my wallet and you might see

A brand new contented me

I’ve got them Buncombe County blues

They’re the ones that I can’t lose

It’s not supposed to be this way

I almost left the other day

I’ve gotta find a place to go

To help me crawl out from this hole

Do my research on the 'net

How much easier could it get?

Chorus II:

My little Corolla don’t look good on me

I need a Beemer or an SUV

My Tai-Chi teacher don’t like me

And no more lessons free

The stores I like they cost too much

My friends tell me I’m out of touch

My first/last date I took her dutch

And now she won’t see me

Living here’s been such a battle

I might go out and see Seattle

It’s a place that I may choose

To shake these Buncombe County blues

Maybe there I’ll find true love

From down below or up above

Do it right and find my groove

And kick these Buncombe County blues

Chorus I:

The wage I earn has left me poor

That house I want I can’t afford

In fancy cafes I get ignored

But I want to be cool too

A New Age cat I’m supposed to be

All dressed down and feelin’ free

Stuff my wallet and you might see

A brand new contented me

Repeat Chorus I to fade…..

Corvair Blue

Driving down the highway in ‘71

Had an old Ford Fairlane

I drove for fun

Saw a 302 Mustang

Plymouth Satellite too

Then I saw the Corvair

Yeah, that one dressed in blue

But it wasn’t the car

That really caught my eye

But who’s behind the wheel

I wanted to try

Can I follow you home?

Maybe come inside?

Lay next to you

Someday be my bride?

Thought I’d seen her before

Maybe in a dream

One of falling waters

And a garden scene

Walking hand in hand

Along a path of gold

To a river’s edge

Where the water flowed

And there she said

You must make your plan

Be strong, grow wise

Someday be her man

But I was afraid

Unsure of what to do

Now I’ve seen her again

In the Corvair blue

Well, she turned right

Just ahead of me

I followed for a while

I couldn’t break free

On the rain swept street

Caught another light too

Had to come to a stop

As she passed on through

As evening approached

Her lights were fading fast

The choice had been made

Not to step on the gas

As she faded away

I knew what not to do

For it wasn’t the time

To chase the Corvair blue.

Driving down the highway in ‘71

Had a old Ford Fairlane

I drove for fun...

Gone

Had enough of this town he used to say

The pressures of now are beginning to weigh

He’s making a move, get outta the way!

Gone.

Gone to a place where the real estate’s cheap

Needs to find work, won’t get too much sleep

When serving another it starts to get deep

Gone.

Chorus:

Gone from the Blue Ridge where he used to roam

Gone from his family, his friends and his home

Gone from the streets he rode motorbikes on

Gone.

Gone from the places where he used to go

Gone from the cafes where he drank the joe

Start again before the memory’s full

Gone…Gone…Gone.

The hills are behind him and flat land ahead

It’s hot in the summer, might work in a shed

Hoping the change doesn’t mess with his head

Gone.

Consider a trailer it might be the way

If things get uptight and there’s no more to say

Hook it up quick and then just drive away

Gone.

Chorus

Could do some fishing if he finds the time

Might help to relax his soul and his mind

Away from another who may treat him unkind

Gone.

There’s plenty of sun for riding a bike

Take a stroll on the beach or go for a hike

Do what he wants and when he would like

Gone.

Chorus

There’s much to do for time is a season

Must try our best and do it with reason

The future is now so stop all the pleasin’

Gone.

Too early to tell how it’ll work out

Just wish him success and bury the doubt

A choice has been made he’s on a new route

He’s Gone.

Start again before the memory’s full

Gone…Gone…Gone.

Start again before the memory’s full

Gone…Gone…Gone.
